Foreign Capital Commercial Bank – Leverage Finance Deal Originator

With M&A activity on the rise and an influx of private equity funds coming to the Japanese market, Optia Partners was called upon to strengthen a commercial banks leverage finance team with an experienced senior banker.

Our client was actively building their leverage finance team in Tokyo in the wake of increased M&A activity and the influx of private equity funds to the Japanese market. A senior banker was required, who was well connected within the fund community and experienced in originating leverage finance or related debt financing in Japan.

The client was open to seeing candidates from both foreign capital firms and local firms, however since the leverage finance market was dominated by the Japanese institutions; we realized the most likely source for talent was going to be from one of the Japanese mega banks. Since this was the first search we had conducted in this area, we started out working with a very limited pool of potential candidates. It became clear that a targeted and proactive approach was going to be necessary to identify the right person.

Having drawn up a target list of firms to approach, we spent the next 2 months meeting and screening potential candidates from the leverage finance and syndicated loan teams at the target firms. The team screened a total of 45 candidates and introduced 5.

Within just over 2.5 months the candidate chosen for the role had accepted the clients offer. The client achieved their objective and was happy to have hired a senior professional with over 15 years in domestic debt financing. The candidate moved from a large institution, where his potential to advance and stand out was limited, to a smaller more dynamic team offering greater challenge and potential reward both financially and professionally.
