Optia expanded the search for an experienced Developer outside of Japan, identifying the final candidate in the US and relocating him to Tokyo for the position.
Our client was the IT department of a large securities firm. They required an experienced C++/JAVA Developer for their Fixed Income Derivatives business. For their Japan office, it has always been a challenge to find talent with the right balance of technical, business and language skill required for their business. The position was open for some time and when frustrated with the results they had obtained from other recruiting firms, they gave Optia a call.
The client was prepared to move quickly and decisively once the right candidate was identified. We knew from past experience that the client was also open to recruiting candidates from outside of Japan. Having built rapport with candidates with a similar profile to that of which was required, we were able to draw upon these relationships to expand our network of contacts outside of the country. In this way, we were able to reach a candidate who was living and working in the U.S. The candidate had the right profile and skill set, however as he had been working outside of industry for a couple of years, his technical skills, specifically, his JAVA skills were not quite up to the task. With both candidate and client being disappointed with the result, and yet, only a small gap that needed to be bridged, we suggested to the client that they put the candidate through an intensive refresher course. Surprisingly, they hadn’t thought of this, and with minimum fuss, were able to have the candidate undertake a course in the client’s New York office.
With a little further negotiation, the candidate was able to undertake the one-week course, relocate with the standard financial assistance from the client and start work within 6 weeks of the offer letter being signed. Perhaps most importantly, the candidate was able to hit the ground running in his new job, with an almost seamless transition into the role for him and the employees/managers surrounding him.
