Human Resources Manager
Global Automobile Manufacturer

Career advancement from Assistant Manager to Manager level.

An Assistant HR Manager was looking to advance his career by obtaining a position as HR Manager. Optia Partners managed to secure HR Manager roles for the candidate on 2 occasions.

The candidate was a Japanese male in his mid 30s. He had just returned to Japan after completing his MBA at a foreign university and was working in a domestic Japanese manufacturing company as an Assistant HR Manager. With his new qualifications, the candidate was now looking to fulfill a mid-term career goal by securing a position as a Human Resources Manager at a global firm before reaching the age of 40.

The candidate consulted with Optia Partner’s specialist in HR recruiting, who recommended several positions. The most appealing position was with a leading global petro-chemical firm, which was looking for a younger HR professional to take on the role of HR Manager. They were seeking a person with an international mind set to replace an administrative member, who was moving back into sales planning. The candidate’s background, experience and character were a good match for the client’s needs and interviews were arranged with the company. After two successful meetings on both sides, the client offered the position of HR Manager with a raise in salary and a chance to participate on the Japanese management committee. With the company planning to be involved in several mergers over the next few years, the candidate would become an integral and valued member of the management team. The candidate had found the ideal position to advance his career and status.

After a week of consideration and discussion with his family and peers however, the candidate surprisingly decided not to take the offer. His president asked him to stay with the company and move into corporate planning, explaining that it was a very important role for the firm. There would be no increase in salary or change in job title however. It was a personal plea from the president and the candidate felt that he should remain loyal to his present company.

Unfortunately the internal move did not prove successful and six months later, the candidate approached Optia’s consultant again asking if there were any other available opportunities. It seemed that corporate planning wasn't the type of career path he wanted to pursue and realized that a career in HR was still in his best interests. The Optia consultant understood the situation and was happy to work with the candidate again. After 3 months, the right kind of position presented itself again. It was with a global automobile manufacturer, which was looking for an internationally minded HR manager who had studied abroad and had previous experience working in a manufacturing company in Japan.

Optia’s consultant made sure the candidate was interested and prepared for the position and guided the candidate through a series of 3 interviews and a video conference with the US headquarters. Even though there was tough competition from several other candidates, the consultant and candidate managed to secure the position. Once again the candidate received a role as HR Manager with a slight increase in salary. He was immediately engaged in some important projects with his new company and grateful to receive a second chance at securing a management level position which would allow career growth opportunity.
